The beginnings of the UWA World Lightweight Championship is unclear.
The championship has traditionally been listed as being decided by Matematico defeating Hashi Masataka in Pachuca on December 21, 1975.
A magazine of the time lists instead first round matches for a tournament to determine the first champion on December 7th in Monterrey. Matches were determined by battle royal
- Lobo Rubio beat Mario Segura
- Solar beat El Signo
- El Matematico beat Tarzan Rocha
- El Gitano beat Aaron Romero
Winners were listed as advancing to the semifinals. Masataka was on the card, but in the main event and apparently not in the tournament at this point.
